Kayak races in honour of the late Eamonn O’Donohoe

Hodson Bay will be the place to be on Saturday, October 7, when canoe enthusiasts from all parts of the country descend on the shores of Lough Ree for what promises to be a very enjoyable day.

The Lough Ree Kayak Races, which is in its inaugural year, is being organised to mark local man Eamonn O Donohoe’s keen interest in canoeing.

Eamonn tragically passed away in March of this year following an accident on Lough Ree. A group of his friends have come together to commemorate Eamonn’s love for the sport.

Hosted by Inny Kayak Club, the event will comprise a number of races around Hodson Bay, with the first starting at 11am from Bay Sports.

There will be a number of categories, with canoeists of all ages and abilities being catered for on the day. Anyone who can swim is being encouraged to attend and try out the sport as instructors will be on hand to ensure that they can safely compete.

Entry on the day is a very modest €20 with concessions for groups and juveniles. All proceeds form part of the local fundraising efforts for Eamonn’s family.

The organisers would like to thank Waterways Ireland and the Irish Canoe Union for their assistance in running the event.
