Birr Castle’s epic game fair bursts with family fun

Ireland’s leading game fair, at Birr Castle on August 26 and 27, is bursting with thrilling entertainment, spectacular displays, fun, fashion, food and a plethora of country sports.

There are international acts, competition prizes totalling €25,000, hundreds of exhibitors and quality trade stands, and day-long entertainment, making this year’s Birr Castle Fair the biggest and best ever seen.

“Add in the thrilling entertainment in the main arena and around the vast site,” says fair director, Albert Titterington, “and everyone is sure of a fun-filled day out.

“There’s medieval jousting with top UK team the Knights of the North and Ireland’s Ancient East springs to life with the spectacular siege of Birr Castle. There’s even a living history village under the battlements of the castle and a separate Viking Village.

“The game fair also includes a fine food festival, an action-packed main arena sponsored by the NARGC; Gunmakers’ Row, Fishermans’ Row, arts and crafts, and a huge tented village of trade stands supplying everything for the country lifestyle.

“Add in one of the best clay pigeon shooting layouts in Ireland, with three guns to be won, lots of ‘have a go’ opportunities including fly casting, air rifle shooting, archery, pony rides, children’s play area plus most of Birr Castle Demesne open to the public for the two days - and this really is one of Ireland’s most action-packed family days out.”

“From falconry to ferrets, international gun dogs to flycasting to the scintillating cowboy-style Cochise horses and the Victorian Poacher in a fun-filled escapade, it might take two days to really see everything.”

Admission for adults costs €15, children €5, and family tickets on offer from €35. The programme and parking are free.
