Athlone Castle and Custume Barracks are delighted offer this pilot scheme of guided tours to visitors.
Athlone Castle Visitor Centre will offer a daily guided tour every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday commencing Friday, July 21 at 2.30pm for the months of July and August. Visitors who opt for the guided tour will be led through Athlone’s history in the company of castle staff who will relay tales of its earliest settlers, legends of its bloodiest battles, and fables of more modern times. Visitors are invited to engage with local expert guides, tapping into their vast knowledge of Athlone and its varied past.
Each Friday in July and August offers an additional treat for the eager culture vulture. Following the Athlone Castle guided tour, visitors are invited to gather at the bottom of the castle ramp where they will be greeted by a member of the Irish Defence Force and embark on a walking guided tour of Athlone’s Custume Barracks. This free tour add-on is confirmed to take place on July 21 and 28 and August 4 and 11 and is a wonderful opportunity to gain insight into the history and current workings of one of Ireland's most important military installations.
The Athlone Castle guided tour will last approximately one hour and normal admission rates apply. The Custume Barracks Friday tours will commence from Athlone Castle at 3.45pm and will be offered free of charge. All tours are subject to availability and places are limited and will be offered on a first come, first served basis.
