Ireland’s Sevens squad joined their female counterparts in qualifying for next summer’s Sevens Rugby World Cup finals, by finishing third in the Exeter Sevens tournament at the weekend.
The squad showed good form throughout the tournament, losing just one match on their road to qualification.
Russia emerged as the Grand Prix Series winners on 74 points, a mere two points ahead of Ireland, who were playing at this high level for the first time this season.
Buccaneers player Jordan Conroy made a massive contribution to Ireland’s progress. The red hot winger scored six tries at Exeter, bringing his haul to 17 tries in the Grand Prix Series in which he was leading scorer. The Pirates will be hoping that he maintains that form in Division 1A.
The World Cup finals take place in San Francisco next July.
