Local Fianna Fáil councillor, Frankie Keena, has called on the council to give Brawney residents its full support as they gear up to compete in the national Pride of Place Awards later this year.
Cllr Keena informed the chamber that two inspectors for the competition is due to return to Brawney in the near future to see all the area has to offer, as part of the judging process.
Cllr Keena reminded the council that Athlone has a strong history in the competition, with Willow Park and Battery Heights performing well in past years. He said the Brawney residents have a list of affordable things they would like to achieve before the inspectors visit, and asked if the council could send an engineer out to them to see how they might help.
Mayor Aengus O’Rourke (FF ) said he had recently attended a meeting in Brawney and witnessed the fine work undertaken by the residents there. He said the residents have gone as far as doing an assessment of the cost of the works themselves, and that the next step is to get an engineer to walk the area with them to see what can be done.
District Engineer, Pat Nally, said the council will sit down with the residents in due course and see in what way the various departments of the council can help them achieve their goals.
