Backpacks cool enough to use even before term starts

It may seem a bit early to be thinking about back-to-school equipment in July, but picking up a few items now will spread the inevitable cost involved. And these are cool enough to want to bring with you on your summer holiday!

Irish company, Freelander, have just launched their Back to School 17 collection of backpacks. Strong, colourful and durable, the backpacks combine function with fashion. The bright colours and designs will ensure children will be happy to carry them.

When choosing a backpack, look for the following safety considerations to ensure your child doesn’t get back problems from carrying too many books.

Always select a backpack that is the right size for your child - the one they used the year before may no longer be the right size.

Choose a lightweight pack and ensure it has two wide, padded shoulder straps: straps that are too narrow can dig into shoulders.

A padded back is a must: it not only provides increased comfort and weight on the back, but also protects kids from being poked by sharp objects or edges inside the pack.

Multiple compartments will help distribute the weight throughout the pack.

Distribute weight evenly. Load heaviest items closest to the back and balance items.

Wear the backpack only when needed. For example, if your child is waiting for the school bus or train, they should take the backpack off, keeping it close to them on the ground or on a bench.

Freelander backpacks are made from lightweight but durable nylon or polyester. They have two wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back.

Lunch bags and pencil cases complete the collection.

Freelander backpacks are available in Shaws and leading retailers nationwide.
