All aboard for Athlone RNLI River Festival

The River Shannon is set to take centre stage this weekend, July 1 and 2, for the Athlone RNLI River Festival.

By kind permission of Waterways Ireland, and supported by Westmeath County Council, the Athlone River Festival kicks off on Saturday, July 1, at 5pm with a sail past from members of the Athlone branch of Inland Waterways Association, followed by a Guinness, oysters and jazz reception on the quay at Sean’s Bar.

On Sunday, July 2, there is a jam-packed agenda. The action kicks off at 10am with a junior fishing competition organised by Athlone Anglers, followed by a sailing demonstration from members of Lough Ree Yacht Club, and a diving demonstration from members of Athlone Sub Aqua Club, at 2pm and 3.30pm respectively.

There has been an addition to the schedule, with the inclusion of an exciting mock hostage rescue by the Army from Athlone Castle at 2.30pm added in. The barrel race at 3pm, RNLI Raft Race at 4pm, and Soapbox Derby at 6pm are sure to entertain everyone with thrills and spills.

Lough Ree RNLI is also seeking sponsorship for some of the events on the day.
