Outgoing Mayor of Athlone, John Dolan, reflected on an eventful year as he bid farewell to the gold chain at Monday’s meeting of the Athlone Municipal District (June 12 ).
Addressing the chamber for the final time as Athlone’s first citizen, Cllr Dolan said while the job had been demanding in many respects, he thoroughly enjoyed his time in the role.
Cllr Dolan listed the Church Street enhancement project, the extension of the cycleway, and the opening of Moate Library as particulary satisfying projects during his time as mayor.
He also took part in Jadotville ceremonies in Dublin, met two visiting ambassadors, oversaw the opening of three factories in the town, and attended a remarkable 159 events in his capacity as mayor.
The theme of Cllr Dolan’s departing speech focused largely on the concept of a team effort. In this respect he thanked the council executive and staff for all of their assistance during the last 12 months, and also all his fellow councillors for working with him in achieving the council’s goals.
Fianna Fáil councillor, Frankie Keena, thanked Cllr Dolan for his efforts as Mayor of Athlone. He said Cllr Dolan filled the brief excellently, was always upfront, straight, and fair to all the members of the council, and that he did both the town and his family proud.
Fine Gael’s Tom Farrell said his party colleague had led by example in the role, and that he hoped the incoming mayor continues in this fashion.
Cllr Aengus O’Rourke (FF ) commended Cllr Dolan for carrying out his duties in a tireless fashion. He remarked that the outgoing mayor had always been accommodating to each and every representative on the council.
Sinn Féin councillor, Paul Hogan, congratulated Cllr Dolan on a successful year and on serving Athlone with distinction during that time. Cllr Hogan commended him for never allowing political allegiances to come into the equation when determining matters for the benefit of Athlone.
Independent councillor, Michael O’Brien, said Cllr Dolan had done a “fantastic job”. He noted that it had been a demanding year in terms of the projects on the table, referencing Church Street in particular.
Cllr Dolan concluded by saying he has lived by a certain motto as mayor - “It’s the people’s chain,” he said, “Whoever has it is only carrying it”.
