New one-way traffic system for Church Street to be implemented in August

The one-way system for Church Street will be implemented in August, councillors heard at this week’s Municipal District meeting (June 12 ). A contractor will then commence a 10-month works programme in October.

It is intended that works outside of Church Street at Hospital junction, Crescent junction and Mardyke Street junction, the erection of signage and changes to traffic lights will commence later this month.

The ‘Orange Loop’, which is intended to indicate to motorists the route they need to follow to get around the town centre and back to Church Street, will now go ahead. At the Part 8 planning phase it had been suggested that the colour should be reconsidered with reference to the heritage of Athlone. However, it has been decided that the Orange Loop best fits the intention of colour coding the route.

Councillors also received an update on the layout of new paving for Church Street, the type of LED lighting to be introduced, the type of tree species to be introduced, and a canopy that will be implemented at The Bawn.

Details of street boards, a website dedicated to the project, and one-hour free parking at The Strand are currently being progressed, and the hiring of a project liaison officer will take place later this month.

A public information day will take place on Thursday, June 22, in the Civic Centre from 2pm to 7pm. All are welcome to attend.
