Roddy returns to reinvigorate Athlone Town

Roddy Collins has been appointed manager of Athlone Town FC, a statement from the club revealed on Thursday last week.

Collins succeeds Ricardo Monsanto, who left the club after just six weeks in charge last month.

Collins will be no stranger to all those connected to the club, having played for Athlone in the mid 1980s, later leading them to the First Division title in 2013 as manager.

He takes control of a club in turmoil due to ongoing investigations into alleged match fixing.

“Roddy’s appointment comes following what has been a tumultuous time for the club,” the club’s statement read.

“The board anxiously awaits the outcome of the FAI’s investigation into allegations Athlone AFC may have been involved in match fixing. At this stage in the process the club can only repeat its call that parallel investigations into the claims to be commenced by Gardaí, Interpol/Europol and Uefa itself and that Athlone AFC is, and has always been, totally opposed to match fixing.”

The statement acknowledges that the reputation of the club has been damaged due to the allegations, but reiterates that there has not yet been any finding of wrongdoing against anyone involved or associated with the club.

The investigation continues.
