Cheap fuel giveaway causes traffic chaos in Athlone

Last weekend, Topaz Athlone service station sold a winning lottery ticket worth more than €6.1m to a lucky customer.

To celebrate, Topaz dropped fuel prices at its Athlone service station to 61c per litre for 61 minutes at 1.06pm on Tuesday this week, which brought traffic in the town to a complete standstill.

Joanne D’Arcy, director of retail operations with Topaz, said of the win: “We are delighted to have sold a winning ticket to a lucky customer at our Athlone service station.

“A jackpot win like this is great for not only the staff at Topaz in Athlone, but for the wider community, and we wanted to join in this celebration by offering a discount to our customers in the Westmeath area.”

The lucky people who managed to avail of this offer were heard beeping their way from the station all the way down through the town. However, for many others the major traffic congestion caused for the duration of the offer was unappreciated.
