Crafts display at Luan Gallery for month of May

Luan Gallery has announced its display for Bealtaine, taking place throughout the month of May.

Bealtaine is Ireland’s national festival which celebrates the arts and creativity as we age. The festival is run by Age & Opportunity, the national organisation that promotes active and engaged living as we get older.

To mark the celebration, Athlone Active Age group will display their crafts in the Boardwalk Gallery on Luan Gallery’s lower ground level during May.

Athlone Active Age is an active retirement group which meets in Abbey Road Artists’ Studios community room once per week. It is a self-organised and independent local group with 18 members who collectively choose what activities to undertake. These can vary from painting, crocheting, knitting, and a host of craft enterprises, samples of which are now on display in the Boardwalk Gallery.

Katriona Gillespie, visual art co-ordinator with Athlone Arts & Tourism, said: “It is wonderful to see such a broad and eclectic mix of craft on display here in the gallery for the month of May. The diverse nature of the work highlights the skills and experiences of the group and is a representation of the level of creative activity taking place among older people in Athlone at the moment and it is indeed something to be celebrated during Bealtaine.”

Luan Gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm, and on Sunday from 12pm to 5pm.
