Longford-Westmeath Independent TD, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, has said today’s announcement of the Summer Works Scheme will provide up to 16 local schools with vital funding for major improvements.
This investment is for vital school projects which aim to upgrade mechanical, sanitation, and roof works in school buildings, both for national and secondary schools in Longford and Westmeath. The works will be carried out in these schools mainly over the summer months, so the disruption to students, teachers, and other school staff will be kept to a minimum.
The capacity of schools to take responsibility for delivering small- and medium-scale projects is a key component of the Summer Works Scheme.
“School authorities have shown in the past how successful the Summer Works Scheme can be and I have no doubt they will again maximise the benefit to their schools of the works sanctioned,” said Deputy Moran.
“This announcement confirms the Government’s continuing prioritisation of capital funding for school buildings which will enhance the learning and working environment for pupils and teachers. It is something that I have argued strongly on since being elected to the Dáil that funding must be made a priority for education.”
The Department’s Planning and Building Unit will be in contact shortly with all schools approved for grant aid under this year’s Summer Works Scheme, with further details and instructions on how to proceed.
