Liam Byrne from Athlone has been shortlisted for the 'Hobbies on the Net Award' at the 2017 open eir Silver Surfer Awards.
The awards recognise the achievements of older people using technology and the internet as well as the volunteers who teach these skills.
It is hard just to keep up with everything award nominee Liam Byrne (61 ) utilises the net for. He has set up so many websites for his various interests. These include one for the internationally recognised choir to which he and his wife belong, and a site specialising in collectables in Roscommon. After 27 years in the Defence Forces, Liam ran his own business and now works for the Department of Education. His internet skills are entirely self-taught.
Justin Moran, head of advocacy and communications with Age Action, said: “The open eir Silver Surfer Awards are all about driving home the benefit of being online to older people with the aim of getting more of them to give it a go. It is hard to believe but the majority of older people, 53 per cent, have never been online. Only 3 per cent of those aged 75 and over have used the internet.”
The awards take place on Tuesday, March 28.
