Athlone Tidy Towns is set to have its AGM next week on March 3 in the Athlone Town Civic Centre at 8pm. Athlone Tidy Towns is judged in the tidiest large urban centre categories G & H. In 2008 Athlone scored 231 points, up marginally on last year.
Entry into the Tidy Towns competition is voluntary and the competition is open to every village, town, and city area in Ireland. The competition is for local communities who are interested in improving the quality of their surroundings and, in the process, developing community spirit.
In general, entries are voluntary committees that identify the work that needs to be done and carry it out in co-operation with other local interests: such as local authorities, businesses, residents' associations, volunteers, etc.
Speaking in advance of the AGM, chairman of the Tidy Towns committee John Butler said, “The Athlone Tidy Towns committee plays an important role in the development of Athlone. The organisation tries its best every year to improve the look of the town through various initiatives such as weekly clean ups, spring cleans in the estates etc. Last year Athlone Town Council committed a good sum of money that was spent well in the area. This year we have already painted the ESB poles so we are off to a great start.”
Cllr Butler went on to say, “We would like to see a great turnout for the AGM and anyone wishing to get involved is more than welcome. We are always looking for supporters and new volunteers.’’
