The Longford-Westmeath branch of the Social Democrats held their first AGM last week in the Newbury Hotel in Mullingar. The branch elected positions including chairperson, vice chairperson, and secretary.
The party was launched in July 2015, and is currently opening branches across the country. Issues discussed at the AGM included the upcoming resettlement of Syrian refugees in the region, the proposed sale of Mullingar Barracks, the upcoming visit to Dáil Eireann, and future public canvasses.
The branch wishes to grow its membership in both counties and contest further local and national elections in the region.
Moate local, Karl Picard, was elected chairperson of the branch and thanked all in attendance for their dedication and support. Athlone native, Anthony Keane, was elected vice chairperson, and Nigel Connor, Mullingar, was elected secretary.
