The recycling centre in Athlone has re-opened to the public as of yesterday, Wednesday, with a new contractor now in place.
Barna Recycling has taken over the operation of the Athlone centre, and as a gesture of goodwill, Christmas trees are now being accepted at the centre free of charge.
A statement issued by Westmeath County Council said: “As a seasonal gesture of goodwill from the new operators, Christmas trees (one per visitor ) will be accepted free of charge at these facilities for the month of January”.
The council-run centres in Athlone and Mullingar remained closed over the Christmas period to allow for the handover of the services to new contractors.
The Mullingar centre is due to re-open next Monday, January 9 under new contractor Mulleady Ltd.
