Christmas safety message from ESB Networks

ESB Networks would like to wish all of its customers a safe and happy Christmas this year, and would like to remind everyone to keep safe this holiday season.

In the home, make sure your own electrical system is safe. Check that your safety trip switch – called a Residual Current Device (RCD ) - works by pushing the test button, and that there are no damaged plug tops or frayed wires. If in any doubt, get in touch with a registered electrician. Here are a few simple safety tips from ESB Networks for the home around Christmas time.

Electrical safety tips for the home

Only use Christmas lights that are in good condition.

Check for frayed wires, loose connections, damaged or cracked plugs or transformers and replace immediately.

Reduce the chances of causing a fire and keep decorations and combustible materials well away from light fittings and other sources of heat such as heaters, fireplaces, and candles.

Switch out all Christmas lights last thing at night and when leaving the house to protect against the risk of fire.

For extra safety, always switch off and unplug appliances and other items when not in use.

If you are involved in putting up outdoor Christmas lights and decorations, make sure that you first check that there are no ESB wires nearby. Make sure outdoor wiring and equipment is properly rated for outdoor conditions and plug them into a portable RCD device for extra safety.

While the weather during winter 2016 has so far been relatively benign, ESB Networks are reminding people to never approach fallen wires following adverse weather. Storms and strong winds can cause damage to the overhead electricity wires and poles, so always be alert and keep your distance.

ESB Networks is reminding customers to turn off electric cookers, ovens, irons, and all other appliances if electricity supply is lost. Leave a light switched on so you know when power has been restored. It also advises customers in areas likely to be impacted by adverse weather to charge their mobile phones in advance.

Remember, fallen electricity wires are live and dangerous. Report them immediately by calling 1850 372999. Any customers without power can check for updates at Powercheck and via Twitter at @ESBNetworks.
