Gardaí urge vigilance after spate of break-ins

Athlone Garda are seeking assistance from the public in relation to a number of burglaries which took place in Athlone and Moate in the past few days.

On Tuesday this week (December 13 ), two homes in the Coosan area were broken into during daytime hours.

Some €1,600 worth of assorted jewellery was taken from one home, while a sum of €600 in cash was taken from the other. Both houses were unoccupied at the time of break-in.

Also on Tuesday, a house was broken into in Moate between 3 and 8pm. The house was ransacked, but it is not clear yet what, if anything, was taken.

Vans in the Monksland area were also targeted this week. On Tuesday evening between 6-11pm, a van which was parked outside a house in the Monksland area was broken into and a quantity of tools stolen. In the same time period, another van in Monksland was tampered with but the culprits did not succeed in taking anything.

Sgt Andrew Haran of Athlone Garda Station is urging members of the public to be extremely vigilant with regard to their home security, particularly at this time of year.

Those who use vans in the course of their business are advised to be extra cautious of security, due to the value of the tools therein.

Anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the above areas, or can help the Gardaí in their inquiries into any of the incidents, is asked to contact Athlone Garda Station on (090 ) 6492600.
