Local soldier to be laid to rest following Brideswell collision

The funeral is to take place in Curraghboy today of a local soldier who was tragically killed in a road accident on Sunday night.

Private Declan Downey, from Lisbrock, Kiltoom, died when his car veered out of control at Cam Hill, Brideswell, struck a ditch, and overturned, at approximately 10.30pm on Sunday (November 20 ).

The 38-year-old suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, while a male passenger, also in his 30s, was taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe with minor injuries.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, and are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who was travelling the R363 between Dysart and Brideswell between 10pm and 10.45pm on Sunday night.

The funeral of the late Private Downey will take place today, Thursday, at 12 noon at St Brigid’s Church, Curraghboy, with burial afterwards ti Cam Cemetery.
