Mayor of Athlone John Dolan has resolved to do all he can to attempt to resolve the dispute between the Community Games and Athlone Institite of Technology.
Speaking at Monday’s municipal district meeting, Cllr Dolan confirmed that he had arranged a meeting between the sides, and that both parties were amenable to get together and discuss the issues.
Just over two weeks ago, Community Games organisers announced that they were moving the finals from AIT, due to “a perceived change” in the relationship between the two bodies, and that they would be seeking a new venue for the games.
However, at the time a statement from AIT expressed shock at the announcement, saying they were willing to continue to support the festival. Cllr Dolan subsequently got in contact with both parties, in the hope that he might be able to act as mediator.
“I am anxious that the Games be salvaged for 2018. I wouldn’t write it off yet,” he said.
