Athlone Gardaí are investigating the cause of a fire which resulted in significant damage to a house at St Mary's Place last Thursday night (October 27 ).
Two units of Athlone Fire Brigade attended the scene shortly after 10pm on Thursday. Rubbish was found burning in the hallway, and the fire was brought under control within half an hour. Gardaí carried out a technical examination of the scene.
No one was in the house at the time of the fire, and the cause is as yet unknown.
Mayor of Athlone John Dolan has a motion on the agenda for next Monday's council meeting requesting the council to take St Mary's Place in charge. Speaking in the wake of Thursday's fire, he said: "The residents of St Mary's Place have had a hard time recently, and I am hopeful things will settle down for them soon."
