It was no ordinary haircut for Athlone youngster Chloe Rickard as she made her way into Teresa Rushe Molloy’s hair studio in Irishtown last Tuesday afternoon.
The five-year-old from Valley Court, Athlone had been excitedly looking forward to the day, as it marked the culmination of her fundraising efforts for UK cancer charity, the Little Princess Trust.
More importantly, it was her opportunity to make a very practical donation to the charity, which supplies real hair wigs to children suffering with cancer, in the form of her own almost waist-length locks.
Having heard of the plight of children suffering from cancer, many of whom suffer hair loss as a side-effect of treatment, Chloe was determined to help and decided to donate her long hair to the Little Princess Trust, in addition to raising funds for the charity.
Family and friends, as well as pupils and teachers at her school, Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí, came on board to lend their support, and so far she has raised an impressive €355 for the charity.
A beaming Chloe was delighted with her new bob-style haircut by Teresa, and happily bade farewell to her long plait as it was packaged up to be sent away for use in a wig.
Chloe is continuing to fundraise for the Little Princess Trust. A Facebook group entitled ‘Chloe’s haircut for Little Princess Trust’, set up by Chloe’s mum Sandra, remains open. Anyone who wishes to make a donation is asked to contact the page. All support is much appreciated.
