Knights of Columbanus to hold annual pub quiz for charity

The Athlone branch of the Knights of Columbanus are delighted to announce their upcoming annual pub quiz, which will take place at The Bounty, Athlone on Thursday, October 6 from 8.30pm.

The annual event will be sponsored by Bacchus Restaurant, and the main beneficiaries of the night will be St Hilda’s Special School, the Athlone branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association, and the Seamus Meade Treatment Fund.

Seamus Meade is a local man, from Assumption Road, Athlone, who is suffering from motor neuron disease. His family and friends have launched a fundraising appeal to help him avail of treatment abroad, and the table quiz is one of several local events planned to raise €30,000 to fund this treatment.

St Hilda's Special School caters for pupils aged between four and 18 years who are assessed with a moderate, severe, or profound general learning disability, and is part of St Hilda's Services.

The Irish Wheelchair Association Athlone branch provides a range of services to people from the local area who have limited mobility.

The organisers of the Knights of Columbanus table quiz have arranged a host of spot prizes which will be up for grabs on the night, which promises to be a fun and entertaining evening for all.

Launching the quiz this week, mayor of Athlone John Dolan wished the organising committee well. He encouraged members of the public to come out and support the event, saying he hoped that a big crowd would support the three very worthy causes.

The Athlone branch of Knights of Columbanus recently completed their annual draw for two All-Ireland football final tickets, which were won by the former MEP and Minister, Pat Cooney. The main beneficiaries from this draw were Fr PJ Hughes' Mission Fund in Ecuador, St Hilda’s Special School, and the Athlone Simon Community.

The Knights of St Columbanus in Athlone have raised over €35,000 for the Fr PJ Hughes Mission fund to date. This money has helped Fr PJ to build two churches, a school, further classrooms, and many more amenities for one of the poorest districts in the world.

Please come along to the table quiz which kicks off at 8.30pm on Thursday, October 6 at The Bounty. All are welcome and your support is greatly appreciated.
