O’Rourke welcomes Baylough improvement scheme

Local Fianna Fáil councillor, Aengus O’Rourke, has welcomed news that measures to reduce speeding in the Baylough area and make the locality safer for all road users will soon be put in place.

The measures include the introduction of two new ramps, the narrowing of the road, lining and resurfacing, and improved signage.

“The improvement measures set out in this scheme for Baylough are long awaited, but very welcome,” Cllr O’Rourke said. “I was pleased to propose such a scheme some time back but it took time to secure the funding to carry out the work. I am pleased that we now have the money in place and the scheme has been finalised. I have been given an assurance that the work will be completed in the next two months.

“Along with the residents and businesses in the area, I have been concerned for some time with the ongoing problem of excessive speed in the Baylough area. Cars going in the direction of town are not respecting the built-up nature of Baylough and the numerous entrances and exits from estates, public houses, and service stations along this stretch of urban Athlone.

“This scheme involves the introduction of two new road ramps, one close to the entrance to Abbeygarth and the other at the top of the hill before you come down to Ardbrae Park. There will also be a narrowing of the road to force road users to slow down. Significant road lining and resurfacing will occur around the entrance to Annsfield Woods and to the front of The Grove filling station to bring more order to this area for vehicles and pedestrians. Improved signage will also be a feature of this scheme.”

Cllr O’Rourke added that he is working on securing funding for the redevelopment of the Roscommon Road junction and hopes to have news on it this year.
