Garrycastle register convincing win to remain in county title hunt

Garrycastle emerged convincing 1-17 to 0-10 winners over Castledaly in Saturday’s Westmeath SFC play-off encounter.

A fine second-half display ensures Garrycastle remain in the hunt for the county title. Leading by 0-9 to 0-5 at the interval, Garrycastle pulled clear after the restart to set up a match against The Downs at Cusack Park next Sunday.

Early on Garrycastle impressed, reeling off seven points without reply before Castledaly registered a score. Paddy Holloway and Lorcan Dolan battled for Castledaly, who were under severe pressure in most areas of the field.

James Dolan and Conor Cosgrove were effective for Garrycastle, who were four ahead at the turnaround. Alex Gardiner was effective in the third quarter landing two points and a splendid goal.

In the closing stages, substitutes Dessie Dolan and Michael Monaghan found the range for Garrycastle, who were too strong for a young Castledaly side. On Friday, Maryland face St Malachy’s in the Westmeath SFC relegation play-off.
