Councillors will make a final decision on whether to proceed with the proposed plans for a one-way system for Church Street on Thursday at a special meeting of the Athlone Municipal District.
The council was supposed to receive a presentation on the project at Monday’s district meeting, but the decision was made to defer it until Thursday due to ongoing engagement with consultants on certain issues raised by councillors and members of the public.
The council and local representatives received a presentation on the proposed plans for Athlone’s main thoroughfare last week where a return to a westbound one-way system was mooted as the preferred option.
This would see traffic approaching from the west side of town over the bridge turn left down Northgate Street and drive in a ‘loop’ around Station Road to access the town centre.
A meeting with local stakeholders and business people followed and it is understood the latter welcomed the plans, albeit with a tinge of cautious optimism. A sum of €3 million is available to carry out the works, and must be drawn down before the end of 2018.
The special meeting of the Athlone Municipal District is scheduled to take place at 4.15pm this Thursday (September 22 ).
