Approximately 15 to 30 per cent of the population suffers from cold sores caused by the herpes simplex virus, with many people experiencing two to three outbreaks a year.
Men and women are equally likely to suffer from cold sores, at any age. A Vogel Bio-Propolis, containing pure propolis extract, is a natural cold sore treatment. Unlike many other treatments, it can be used at any stage of the cold sore’s development, not just when the initial tingling feeling occurs.
Bio-Propolis contains plant extracts that have been mixed with honeybee wax to make a natural antiseptic sealant. Once applied, the ointment soothes the cold sore and forms a protective barrier. The skin’s healing process then works to return the affected area to a healthy condition.
Ali Cullen, nutritional therapist at A Vogel, offers some insight into the condition: “Several factors can cause the unattractive watery blisters that so many suffer from. Alcohol, tiredness, and partying can all cause cold sores, especially if you’re already feeling run down from the pressures of everyday life. In addition, be careful who you kiss, as cold sores spread through contact.
“To help prevent cold sores, avoid foods rich in amino acids such as chocolate and nuts, as these feed the cold sore virus. Instead, eat foods that are rich in vitamin C and try taking a supplement such as 500mg of L-Lysine twice a day. This can counter the virus. Covering a cold sore in make-up may hide the embarrassment but it can irritate it.
“Bio-Propolis forms a protective barrier and soothes the cold sore, so apply this before putting make-up on. Apply as soon as you become aware of the cold sore. If it has already erupted, the protective barrier will prevent it from spreading, so use Bio-Propolis throughout its course.”
