Athlone Film Club's season kicks off with the Oscar-nominated "Wild Tales"

Athlone Film Club is all set to launch its new and exciting 2016-2017 season.

Now in its ninth season, the aim of the club is to promote world/contemporary and classic films not usually seen on commercial cinema screens.

Opening this seasons great calendar of offerings is Wild Tales. Directed by Damián Szifrón of Argentina, the Spanish language film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2015.

For sheer entertainment value, you will be hard pressed to beat this outrageous, aptly named anthology film. One of Cannes’ most buzzed-about discoveries, Szifrón’s feature plays like a calling card from a preposterously talented newcomer, being full of crazy ideas and verve.

Szifrón gives us half a dozen stories for the price of one. Aside from the Argentine locales, there is not much to link them, except that each tale strips away at the veneer of civilised society to reveal something more primal and animalistic underneath. Roald Dahl would relish the macabre yarn about the waitress in an empty late-night diner who realizes that the boorish customer she is serving is the man who ruined her life.

Then there is the bride who discovers her husband has been unfaithful and exacts her revenge during an unforgettable wedding party; the best or worst road rage episode you will ever see.

The film is 122 minutes in length and has a 15A advisory rating. Wild Tales will screen on Tuesday, September 6, from 8pm.

Athlone Film Club runs from September to February with a film every two weeks. All films are on Tuesdays and screened in the Dean Crowe Theatre and Arts Centre. Films start at 8pm but those interested are invited to gather in the bar from 7.30pm for a complimentary glass of wine. Membership is only €10 which includes your first film, and each film is €8 thereafter.
