Ugly duckling with a twist in heart-warming Honk!

Castlerea Musical Society presents a modern twist on the classic tale of the Ugly Duckling with the musical Honk! at Roscommon Arts Centre, from Monday to Saturday February 23 to 28.

Celebrating its 40th birthday this year, the society has decided to take this opportunity to move to a new venue to produce this extra special fun show for all the family.

Honk! is the world famous Hans Christian Andersen tale of the Ugly duckling re-hatched and reborn as a full-on musical. It's a free range frolic with flocks of ducks, geese, and swans with ducklings, froglets, frogs, cats and any other creature you may encounter around a duck pond.

The story opens to find Ida anxiously sitting on her eggs waiting for them to hatch. One egg, however, seems strangely larger than the others and when it finally hatches later than the rest, the ugly chick that emerges is nothing like its siblings. And worse, instead of the expected quacking sound it makes a loud HONK!

Ida, however, warms to him and defends him from the ridicule of the rest of the farmyard fowl. In his loneliness he befriends the cat who invites him to lunch - his lunch. Ugly escapes by a feather but with night closing in he becomes lost. Will he make it back home?

A great show is promised for all the family as Castlerea Musical Society celebrates its 40th birthday.

The completely new production team consists of producer Michael Coen, musical director Dr Joseph Ryan, a native of Athlone, chorus mistress Heather Shine, also a native of Athlone, and choreographer Vivienne Caldbeck Moran.

Honk! runs from Monday February 23 to Saturday February 28 at 8pm at Roscommon Arts Centre.

Special concession rates are on offer for the Monday and Tuesday shows, so why not round up a group of friends or family and come along to enjoy a night of music, song, dance, lights, and action.
