Flood relief measures totalling €100,000 for Athlone have been given the go-ahead, Longford-Westmeath Independent Deputy, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, has confirmed.
The first of these is for the Canal Walk which involves the use of a temporary water-based flood barrier and a new valve configuration. The second of these is at Griffith Street where a new non-return valve will be constructed to prevent water from surcharging onto the Quay area.
The cost of these works is expected to be in the region of €100,000 and the Office of Public Works (OPW ) has indicated its willingness to provide funding for these measures. It is expected that these works will be undertaken by the council shortly.
“As everyone knows these areas have been particularly affected by flooding in recent winters and it has been a key priority for me going into Government to address the problems with a great sense of urgency,” Deputy Moran said.
“The third area that is being addressed is The Park in Athlone. Discussions are ongoing between the council and OPW on how best to deal with this issue, but it is hoped that a solution may be identified for which OPW could consider funding.”
