Two extra-time goals from Carlow’s Michelle Nolan ended Westmeath’s hopes in a keenly contested Liberty Insurance Premier Junior Camogie Championship semi-final.
Nolan was taken off in the 50th minute, but returned for extra time to make a stunning impact against a gritty Westmeath outfit.
Johnny Greville’s team had contributed to a fine match, but the concession of two late goals proved costly as Carlow shaded a lively battle.
Even though Carlow had joint captain Marion Doyle red-carded in the 26th minute, Westmeath were unable to take control of an interesting match.
Westmeath enjoyed productive moments in the opening period with Dinah Loughlin impressing for the midlanders, who led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half time.
With Doyle sent off, Westmeath appeared to be in a healthy position, but Carlow produced a defiant second half showing to level at 0-9 at the end of normal time following an exciting finish.
Eleanor Tracey was instrumental for Carlow, who brought Nolan back into the action and she had a devastating impact when the issue was delicately poised.
In the 67th minute Nolan pounced to rifle a brilliant goal after Ali Ruschitzko had caused problems in the Westmeath defence.
The same duo combined at the start of the second period of extra time as Westmeath were suddenly under severe pressure.
Greville’s charges launched a late comeback mission that fell agonisingly short. A Pamella Greville goal brought Westmeath to within two points of Carlow in the closing stages.
Despite the late Westmeath rally, Carlow held out to record a crucial victory and Westmeath were left to reflect on what might have been.
