National Heritage Week at Athlone Castle

Athlone Castle is gearing up for National Heritage Week, taking place from Saturday, August 20, to Sunday, August 28, this year.

The week is a celebration of Ireland’s built, natural, and cultural heritage. This year’s theme is to explore '100 Years of Heritage' and Athlone Castle Visitor Centre has planned a number of events throughout the week to suit all ages.

A ‘Walk the Walls’ guided tour of the exterior battlements of the castle will take place on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, August 22, 23, and 25, from 2pm to 3pm each day. Learn about the role of these battlements, which date back to the 13th century, from castle staff and volunteers.

Locals and visitors to Athlone are encouraged to avail of an open day on Wednesday, August 24, when admission to the castle will be free on all single admissions from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

On Saturday, August 20, Friday, August 26, and Saturday, August 27, a ‘Castle Discovery’ guided tour of the interior exhibitions is on offer from 2pm to 3pm. Discounted admission rates will apply for the tours.

A ‘100 Years Ago’ talk will take place in the castle lower keep on Sunday, August 21, and on Saturday, August 27, from 11am to 12 noon, offering a great insight into 20th century life in Athlone.

The Poetry in the Park community group will complete the Athlone Castle Heritage Week programme of events with a special poetry recital in the castle courtyard between 2pm and 3pm on Sunday, August 28.

Carmel Duffy, manager of Athlone Arts & Tourism, said: “Athlone has a rich heritage landscape we can be very proud of and National Heritage Week is a great opportunity for all ages and interests to learn more about Athlone Castle."
