Buccaneers’ season gets underway on Saturday afternoon (August 20 ) when they host Galway Corinthians in the opening round of the Connacht Senior League at Dubarry Park.
The Pirates begin the defence of their league title in a match that will give supporters of the Athlone club an opportunity to run their critical eyes on how Brett Wilkinson’s charges are shaping up for the forthcoming Ulster Bank League.
Much interest will focus on hooker John Sutton who has joined from Naas and lock Andrzej Bardos. The towering second-rower is a native of Hungary and has played in France for the past couple of seasons. Sutton switches from the County Kildare club and will also play in Division 1B for the first time this season.
Buccs opening AIL fixture is away to Ballynahinch on Saturday, September 17, with the first home game being a repeat of last season’s when Shannon come to the Midlands the following Saturday, September 24.
Kick-off for Buccaneers versus Galway Corinthians is at 2.30pm. Admission is free.
