Local councillor and mayor of Athlone John Dolan (FG ) has welcomed the completion of the walkway to join the Ballymore and Rosemount roads in Moate.
“I have been involved with this project from day one, along with my colleagues in Moate Tidy Towns. This area was very overgrown and had become a dumping ground. Along with Jimmy Redmond and Ollie Johnston we looked at the project and planned to clear it back initially,” said Cllr Dolan.
“When we saw the potential of linking up the two roads with a hardcore surface I approached the council with our proposals. From the start the council bought into the project. I have to compliment the council engineers for their commitment and help with machines and materials, along with voluntary work, which made this project possible.
“The walkway is fabulous and indeed a great amenity alongside the cycleway. We intend to develop this into a walking or cycling route which gives easier access to the Greenway,” concluded Cllr Dolan.
