Compost demonstration site opens today in Ballinahown

The red ribbon will be cut on the first Master Composter Demonstration Site in the county this Thursday, May 26 at 7.15pm in Ballinahown.

This initiative by Westmeath County Council and Stop Food Waste aims to showcase the various types of compost units available. This is an open evening for members of the public to come and see a working site. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the various units and how they work with the Master Composters.

This site was constructed as part of the Master Composters and Stop Food Waste Challenge Course, and participants took part over a five-week period. They examined the food that is wasted, the reasons why, the actions that can help reduce it, and what to do with the remainder.

Nuala Madigan delivered the course and she stated: “The benefit of this course is that you get a hands-on opportunity to build and maintain the site and to work your way through learning about each of the compost units, their suitability and their benefits.

“On the day of construction the weather was really very bad and I would like to thank all those who braved it out in the lashing rain but am pleased to say that it was all worth it!”

The site is situated adjacent to the children’s playground in Ballinahown and contains various compost units including a composter, green cone, burial system, wormery, leaf mould net, hot pile, etc. This site will be open to the public to view on an ongoing basis and will be maintained by the Ballinahown Development Association.

The event is outdoor, free of charge, and is open to the public.
