Tuar Ard Arts Centre is pleased to welcome Uisneach - an exhibition by local artist Sheila Martin.
Steeped in history for at least five millennia, the ancient ceremonial site of Uisneach in Loughnavalley, Co Westmeath is the inspiration for this collection, owing to the fact that Sheila grew up beside it.
Sheila graduated with a BA in Art & Design from GMIT in 2011. Painting all of her adult life, this is her first solo exhibition, in which she hopes to convey some of the history and sense of energy associated with Uisneach.
The collection of paintings has an abstract quality. The basic elements of Usineach are composed of abstract shapes denoting the land, monuments, and stones and the turbulent events of Uisneach's past. Other works convey the energy of the site. Alongside these are knife paintings, giving a layered effect. These might remind us of not only the energy of this remarkable site but the layered secrets of process and ritual held within – layers of history and time.
Most of all, Sheila hopes the exhibition will promote and highlight this hugely important historic site – the jewel at the heart of our country.
The exhibition will be officially opened by historian Ruth Illingworth on Friday, May 27 at 8pm, and will be on display in Tuar Ard for the summer months.
