Athlone’s Luan Gallery is currently presenting its second specially scheduled centenary exhibition: ‘The People The Land’.

This exhibition is a two-man show which runs until Sunday, June 19, showcasing the works of two painters of history: Tom Byrne and Paul Woods.

History and portrait painter Tom Byrne will show 16 new artworks based on the topic of the 1916 Easter Rebellion. This series of work features the 16 executed rebel leaders and will include paintings of Thomas Clarke, James Connolly, Patrick and Willie Pearce, and Thomas Kent. This section of the exhibition, ‘The People’, will invite visitors to come face to face with the 16 executed men.

‘The Land’ will feature Paul Woods’ work. Woods will show six new paintings also on the theme of the 1916 Rising, completed in an abstract expressionist fashion. Woods works look at the scars and devastation of the land caused during the fighting. Bringing together Woods’ two principal interests, visual imagery and military history, these works of ‘The Land’ will juxtapose against ‘The People’, creating a strong exhibition of painting.
