SuperValu Tidy Towns competition launched this week

The 2016 SuperValu Tidy Towns competition was officially launched on Tuesday, April 5, by Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Alan Kelly, and Des O’Mahony, SuperValu marketing manager.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of SuperValu’s sponsorship of the competition and communities throughout Westmeath are invited to get involved. Now in its 58th year, the competition is administered by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government and is a catalyst for voluntary activity and community participation across the country.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Kelly said: “The SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition not only brings huge environmental benefits to communities but it also encourages community development. The competition recognises the work of the Tidy Towns volunteers, from the planning stage to the completion of projects. It gives communities a vehicle to come together to take ownership of their own locality and effect positive change.

“In 2015 we had a record entry to the competition; I hope this year, as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Proclamation of Independence that even more communities will enter and enable the continued success of this competition.”

The closing date for receipt of entries for this year’s competitions is May 20.
