Deputy principal to fill Boxer’s vacated council seat

A local primary school deputy principal has been nominated to take over from Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran on the local council.

Coosan native Ailish McManus, who is deputy principal of St Mary’s NS in the town, was named on Tuesday as Boxer’s successor, after he was successful in his bid to be elected to Dáil Éireann.

Nominated by the Independent Alliance, she will be officially ratified at the Westmeath County Council meeting at the end of March, before attending her first Athlone Municipal District meeting as a councillor.

Ms McManus was director of elections for Boxer’s general election campaign in recent months, and has worked alongside him during the 17 years he has been a councillor.

“It is great to have Boxer’s support, and I would like to acknowledge and thank him. I am delighted with the nomination and hope I will be co-opted into the seat,” she said.

“It will take me a bit of time to learn the ropes, and to find out the best way to support the people of Athlone and bring their issues to the council chamber,” she added.
