The sudden passing of Anthony O’Brien from heart disease in April of last year deeply saddened and shocked the community in Athlone and beyond.
In his memory, Anthony’s wife Deirdre, family and friends are holding the Anthony O’ Brien Memorial Cycle on Sunday, May 1. The group will leave Páirc Chiarán bright and early at 9am, heading westwards through Ballinasloe and Loughrea and on to Galway city, where the day will culminate with a well-earned barbeque at the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill.
The whole event promises to be a rewarding group experience that will have the effect of helping those who, like Anthony, are afflicted by heart disease. All monies raised will go directly to Croí, the cardiac foundation. Fundraising efforts centre on the sponsoring of cyclists and support from local businesses, but will also include other social events such as the upcoming table quiz, raffle, and auction night to be held in The Bounty on Friday, March 4, from 8pm.
Speaking at the launch of the cycle, Anthony’s wife Deirdre commented. “Myself and the O’Brien family would like thank all of our sponsors, especially Corrib Oil, for all of their support. We hope this event will be a great success for Croí and a wonderful tribute to Anthony.”
A table quiz and charity auction will take place in the Bounty, Athlone, this Friday, March 4. There will be an array of prizes up for grabs including tickets to see Ireland versus Sweden at the Euros. All money raised will go to Croí (Cardiac Foundation ) as part of the Anthony O’Brien Memorial Cycle fundraising effort. The events kick off at 8pm.
