An important campaign looms for Athlone Town, who continue to prepare ahead of the upcoming SSE Airtricity League First Division season with a Leinster Senior Cup clash against Wexford Youths at Lissywollen on Saturday evening, February 20, with a 7.45pm kickoff.
Alan Mathews’ squad were recently defeated 4-2 by newly promoted Finn Harps in Mullingar. It was a useful workout for both teams before next month’s competitive fixtures commence.
Mathews is currently working hard to stitch a decent squad together for what promises to be a demanding First Division, with Limerick FC especially strong at this level. Drogheda United and UCD also possess plenty of talented footballers, but Athlone’s youthful collection will be hoping to spring a few surprises when the serious action gets underway.
