A fine new year’s gift from your library

Have you got some library books lurking under your bed? Does your heart sink when you think of fines on overdue books?

To kick off 2016, Westmeath libraries will not only be introducing free membership for everyone, but will also be hosting an amnesty for fines on overdue books between January 4 and 23. The libraries not only want to welcome new members, but also to welcome back those who may not have visited their local library in recent times.

Library material may be handed into any library during normal opening hours or into ‘book drops’ where they are provided. Local libraries want to restore these items to the library shelves so that a new generation of readers can enjoy them. This is a once-off chance as from Monday, January 25, the fine system will be implemented at a cost of 30 cent per overdue item per week.

Why not make it your New Year’s resolution to use your local library? Read a paper, use a computer, check out the local history section, ask about e-books and e-audiobooks, or borrow a book; you may be surprised by the range of activities and services available.
