Athlone Gardaí are calling on motorists to exercise caution and to have consideration for others when travelling through flooded areas of road.
While all local roads in the town are currently passable, a spokesperson for the Gardaí said that there is a concern that vehicles driving through water may disturb flood defences around homes or businesses. Motorists are being advised to drive slowly and carefully through flooded areas, and to only travel on affected roads when necessary.
Gardaí are also encouraging members of the public to be mindful of those living in exposed areas, and to contact either Westmeath County Council, who are the lead agency in flood management, or the local Gardaí in urgent cases.
