Steely determination sees Westmeath hurlers overcome DCU

Brendan Murtagh’s brilliant free-taking helped Westmeath record a fine 2-20 to 1-17 Walsh Cup win over DCU at St Loman’s on Sunday afternoon.

Michael Ryan’s team now face NUI Galway this Saturday before completing their Group 4 campaign against Galway at Cusack Park on January 17. Despite conceding a 25th-minute goal, which was scored by DCU’s Sean Gray, Westmeath still went in at the interval leading by 0-13 to 1-5.

Immediately after the restart DCU impressed, but Westmeath responded as Warren Casserly and Killian Murphy bagged vital goals for the Midlanders. “What pleased me most was the attitude of the players,” Ryan said. “We have a lot of new guys on the panel, but overall it was a very good start for us.”
