The project management committee for the upcoming amalgamation of St Joseph's and St Aloysius secondary schools on the west side of the Shannon issued an information bulletin in recent days to parents, teachers, and the local community.
The bulletin revealed that technical officials from the Department of Education visited the site on November 16 to begin the architectural planning process. The project management committee has also been hard at work, currently planning for enrolment commencing in 2016, a name for the school, a new curriculum, a new school uniform, and the facilitation of staff. The provision of a state-of-the-art co-educational facility will also include an application for an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD ) Unit.
Under the auspices of the project management committee, work has already begun on the Summerhill site to prepare a football training pitch, and local clubs have pledged co-operation in making the new school site a centre for sports facilities in the area. The new school will have a modern gymnasium with ancillary facilities such as changing rooms, the first of its kind in the west Athlone area.
Students enrolling for the 2016/2017 school year can expect to benefit from an enhanced curriculum which is being planned in preparation for the amalgamation the following year. The Project Committee will issue news updates to parents and the local community on a regular basis.
