Several students from Athlone have been awarded Tormey scholarships to study law in some of the country’s most prestigious third level institutions.
The first place winner this year is Kevin Seery, Cornafulla, Athlone, a past pupil of Athlone Community College and son of Thomas and Catherine Seery. He is now studying Law at Trinity College, Dublin.
The second place winner is Alanna Byrne, Kiltoom, Athlone, daughter of John and Jacqueline Byrne and a past pupil of Our Lady’s Bower. Alanna is now studying Law at UCD. Third place was awarded to Aine Rushe, Ballykeeran, Athlone, daughter of Denis and Anita Rushe and also a past pupil of Our Lady’s Bower. Aine is studying Law at Trinity College, Dublin.
The scholarships are presented each year to the students with the highest points achieved in the Leaving Certificate examinations, drawn from the Athlone, Moate, Ferbane, Ballymahon, Roscommon, Ballinasloe, and Tullamore school areas, who are in their first year as law students. This is the 23rd presentation of the scholarship.
The scholarship is valued at €1,200 for first place, €600 for second place, and €300 for third place, and will be payable for one year to students attending a faculty of law in any university in the Republic of Ireland. In addition, Tormey’s donate the sum of €500 to the winning school which has the highest cumulative points for law students within that year. Both the winner and the winning school each receive a silver perpetual trophy.
Tormey’s also present a silver perpetual trophy to a school within the Midlands, which it introduced in 2000 to commemorate the Millennium. The winning school will have the highest cumulative points for law students within that year. The trophy went to Our Lady’s Bower, Athlone, for 2015.
