Moate cake designer takes home two prizes from international competition

Cake designer Tanya Ross of Novel-T Cakes, based in Moate, has been awarded international recognition for two of her creations.

Ms Ross took part in the Cake International, a sugarcraft, cake decorating, and baking festival, in Birmingham. The show attracts enthusiasts, renowned industry experts and professional cake decorators and sugarcrafters from across the globe, each one sharing a passion for all things cake. The competition boasts the world’s largest display of competition pieces with well over a thousand entries.

She entered two of her pieces, one a horse head cake in the Supported or Sculpted Novelty Cake category, and the other an Ireland cake in the International Class category where participants were asked to create something representative of their home country. Her horse head cake secured her gold while she was awarded silver for her Ireland-themed cake. This is not the first time this year that Ms Ross has been recognised for her talents. In February this year she won a gold and bronze medal at the All-Ireland Catex Chef Ireland competition.

Speaking this week, an overjoyed Ms Ross said: “I was absolutely delighted to be awarded gold for my carved horse head cake and a silver for my Ireland cake. I couldn’t believe I could win gold in such a prestigious competition, and I think I still haven’t come back down to earth yet. It’s been a great year for me and my cake business.”

Tanya Ross teaches sugarcraft classes at Decobake in Athlone, and further examples of her work can be seen on her Facebook page Novel-T Cakes.
