RTÉ‘s Cathal Murray returns to host the Samaritan Christmas Concert

RTE’s Cathal Murray will return to his homeland of Athlone to host the 24th annual Samaritans Christmas Concert on December 10.

Cathal Murray was raised in Retreat Heights, Athlone, and started his broadcasting career in Midlands 103. In 2001 he moved to RTÉ where he currently presents The Weekend on One with Cathal Murray every Saturday and Sunday morning from 6-8am on RTÉ Radio 1. He also deputises for Ronan Collins. In the past he has presented Late Date, Risin’ Time and Between The Lines and, along with Ailbhe Conneely, was the first presenter of News2day, RTÉ’s news service for children.

When not listening to music, he breaks, on average, three squash rackets a year, has run two marathons and is not planning on a third. Cathal said: “I’m delighted to be hosting it again, it’s always a very special occasion”.

The Samaritans  24th Annual Christmas  Concert will be held in the Franciscan  Friary Church, Athlone, on Thursday, December 10, at 8pm. It will feature the Army Band of the 2nd Brigade,  tenor David Martin, Athlone A Cappella, Athlone Town Pipe  Band, and organist Brother Damian.

Tickets cost €12 and can be purchased from Cunninghams Chemists on the Dublin Road and Monksland; Midland Sound Equipment; and the Friary. The Samaritans are available on Freephone 116 123, 24 hours a day for anyone who is troubled, despairing, or just needs to talk to someone in confidence.
