This week will see the replacement and refurbishment of the lighting on the ‘White Bridge’ in Athlone.
This follows a motion raised by Fianna Fáil Councillor Aengus O’Rourke in recent months. Speaking earlier this week, Councillor O’Rourke said: “I am delighted that Iarnród Éireann have agreed to carry out improvements to the White Bridge. This week all of the lights on the bridge will be replaced with LED lighting which will give uniformity and consistency to the appearance of this iconic bridge at night time.
“I have also asked Iarnród Éireann to consider repainting the bridge and to remove the growth which is evident along this structure. I will continue to liaise with Iarnrod Eireann on these important issues. The White Bridge occupies a commanding position in our town and is immediately recognisable as Athlone’s railway river crossing.
“As a growing tourism town, with visitor numbers on the rise, we have a responsibility to ensure that all of the infrastructure that defines our town is in good condition and is well presented. I want to thank the local staff at Iarnród Éireann in particular for their help and co-operation in this matter, and I look forward to working with them on the remaining matters.”
